Try something new in Cambridge

Value your time & try something new in Cambridge

Free time is a luxury, a precious resource, so it’s important to use it wisely.  If you’re lucky enough to live in Cambridge there are plenty of activities on offer to entice you to spend your free time.  But have you ever noticed that when you live in a place you don’t always see or take the time to enjoy what’s on offer because you get caught up in work, family life and household jobs.  Our advice is to value the time you have, make time to spend with friends and family, get involved in your community and make every minute count

I’ve lived in Cambridge for over 20 years and discovered many special things to enjoy in the city.  Here are some I’d like to share some.

Get fit in the parks

With the summer months on the horizon get out and about and enjoy the wonderful parks.  Many of the parks have FREE to use tennis courts.  If like me you enjoy running there are some great clubs that use the parks for training including the Cantab Hash House Harriers and the Cambridge parkrun.  The growing popularity of Bootcamps has not passed Cambridge by with some wonderful classes.  One of my favourites is Zone Cambridge Bootcamp, a wonderful group that has early morning, evening, and online classes.

City of learning

Cambridge is a city of learning and we’re surrounded by iconic buildings, Nobel prize winners and events – too many to mentions – to inspire learning.   I discovered Alliance Francais Cambridge, a charitable organisation and want to share details of their FREE drop-in French classes providing homework support.  These take place every Wednesday, between 3 – 5 pm for anyone who wants to improve their French (early years, GCSEs, A-Levels, degree, business, or conversational).  Such a lovely opportunity, with wonderful cultural and community events with an emphasis on everything French. Bonjour, it’s never too late to learn.

Cambridge on foot

When most people think of the top “to do” in Cambridge, punting springs to mind, but you don’t need to float to see Cambridge at its best.   Here are my three favourite walks:

  • The Cambridge Sculpture Trails are amazing, you can see a Henry Moore in Clare College or Anthony Gormley in Downing Street.
  • Another way to discover the hidden history of Cambridge is with local historian & Blue Badge Guide Allan Brigham on his ‘Town NOT Gown’ tours for residents.  These will be starting up again in the summer.
  • I would highly recommend this 2.5hr Cambridge Art Walk.  Whether new to the City or an old-timer I am sure that after you have completed this tour you will discover something new.

While you are discovering all these wonderful hidden gems in Cambridge, pop into any of the great independent cafes for a bite to eat, and an inventive smoothie or a delicious coffee.

And lastly to make sure you make the most of your leisure time:

  1. Get everyone involved in planning family activities.
  2. Plan ahead to get the best early bird deals.
  3. Say no to jobs or tasks that can wait or better still find a local expert to do them.

Enjoy your free time in Cambridge, it’s a beautiful city.
